The train car was scorching that night. The woman beside me was pregnant and she looked away. The air was alive and I was caught in a coil that was going down. I couldn’t look up because the ceiling looked like a grave that was dug just for me.
Crowded streets but I was the only one there. I walked to Central Park and the trees were on fire. The bench I chose was as harsh as the pain in my spine. The sky was endless but I couldn’t look up. I knew I couldn’t run and that’s all I think I needed.
Back in Harlem, feeling numbed out. The dogs were barking again and I couldn’t sleep. Kept thinking about the window that didn’t have bars. Waiting for someone to climb in and end it. Thought about it again and didn’t change my mind.
Windows down, the highway ate me. Thought I shouldn’t go but I did. There was a sigh in the back seat, but no one was there. I drove really really fast that night.
